Song Dong-Keum

Abstract
Objective: To analyze clinical characteristics, laboratory findings of tuboovarian abscess and compare the group treated conservative therapy with that treated surgical therapy.

Method: From January 2004 to September 2005, we retrospective studies on medical records of 23 admitted tuboovarian abscess patients in Dae-Jeoun Konyang university hospital.

Results: Of 23 patients, we classified 10 patients treated conservative therapy into group I and 13 patients treated surgical therapy into group II. Between two groups, there was no significant differances in age, parities and number of abortion. Number of intrauterine divice users was 8 and all of 2 patients were group I and 6 patients were group II, but there was no significant P value. There were no meaningful differences in rise of body temperature and CRP level, leukocyte count, percent of neutrophil, and the size of mass.

Conclusion: The selection of treatment mode of tuboovarian abscesses should be applied to the patients¡¯ status respectively. Broad-spectrum antibiotics have enable patients to be treated soley with medical therapy, avoiding the need for surgery and conservating the fertility future. Percutaneous drainage with broad-spectrum antibiotics are becoming popular options and may avoid surgical intervention, but prospective studies are needed to assess their efficacy.
